How to Choose a Challenge Coin Size: 1.5" to 3" Explained

How to Choose a Challenge Coin Size: 1.5" to 3" Explained

Size is one of the first decisions you'll make for a custom challenge coin, and it affects everything else: how much detail fits, how the coin feels in your hand and what it costs. This guide shows what each size looks like and how to pick the right one.

Challenge coin sizes at a glance

Coins are measured across their diameter. For reference, a U.S. quarter is just under 1" (about 24 mm) across, so even our smallest coin is noticeably bigger than everyday change.

SizeMillimetersMold fee
1.50"38 mm$100
1.75"44 mm$125
2.00"51 mm$150
2.50"64 mm$200
3.00"76 mm$300

Mold fees are one-time charges. See per-coin prices for every size in how much custom challenge coins cost.

1.5": simple and economical

The smallest standard size works well for simple designs: a logo, a short motto and a year. It's the most economical choice and a good fit for large giveaways, events and student awards. Keep text short so it stays readable.

1.75": the classic size

This is one of the two sizes most customers choose. A 1.75" coin has room for a crest or logo with text around the edge, and it's comfortable to carry every day, which matters for coins that get checked at the bar.

2": the all-rounder

This is the other size most customers choose. The extra quarter inch gives you noticeably more room for detail, extra colors or longer text, and a 2" coin has a satisfying weight in the hand. If you're unsure, 2" is a safe choice.

2.5": room for detail

Choose 2.5" when your design has a lot going on: several unit patches, a detailed scene, a list of names or a long motto. It makes a strong impression in a presentation case.

3": the showpiece

A 3" coin is made to be displayed. It's ideal for commander's coins, major awards, anniversaries and coins with intricate artwork or 3D sculpting.

How to choose the right size

  • Count your design elements. A logo and a line of text fits 1.5" or 1.75". A crest, a motto, a name and a date wants 2" or more.
  • Think about text. Small lettering needs room to stay readable. If your design has a lot of words, go up a size.
  • Think about how it will be used. Coins carried daily are best at 1.75" or 2". Coins for display or ceremonies can go bigger.
  • Consider your budget. Larger coins cost more per coin and have a higher mold fee. See the price tables in our pricing guide.
  • Match your other coins. If your unit or company already has coins, matching the size makes a consistent collection.

How much fits on each size?

As a rule of thumb, think of a coin as a center design surrounded by a ring of text:

  • Center: one main image, such as a crest, a badge, a logo or a scene. At 1.5" keep it simple. At 2.5" and up, it can be detailed, with multiple elements.
  • Outer ring: the name of your organization or a motto. Shorter text can be larger and easier to read; long names fit better on bigger coins.
  • Small details: dates, a short slogan or a unit number can sit below the center image.

Remember you have two sides. Moving the motto, names or values to the back often lets you keep a smaller, more affordable size without crowding the front.

Size and presentation

If you'll present coins in a case, display them in a rack or mail them with a card, size matters there too. Larger coins make a bigger impression in a velvet presentation case, while 1.75" and 2" coins fit easily in pockets, coin capsules and keychains. See all our packaging on the coin options page.

Custom shapes and bottle openers

Custom shapes are measured at their widest point. Most are 2" to 3" across so the outline reads clearly. Bottle opener coins need room for the opener as well as the design, so they're usually larger too. Both are quoted on request; see examples in the custom shapes section of our gallery.
